The Phil Beer Band
Doors for this event will open 30minutes prior to the advertised start time.
In association with Gulbenkian, Folk In The Barn present The Phil Beer Band, with support The Hawthornes.

Phil Beer, best known for his multi-instrumental wizardry as one half of England’s top acoustic/roots duo Show of Hands, also tours with his own band. Described by The Guardian as ‘where Steve Earle and Richard Thompson collide’, an evening with The Phil Beer Band is fast, frenetic, ‘feel-good’ and leavened with a good helping of humour.

The Phil Beer Band was conceived as a ceilidh band back in the early 1990’s to provide music for a busy Gloucestershire village social life. It consisted of Phil Beer (Albion Band, Show of Hands), Simon Care (Albion Band and Edward the Second). Steve Crickett ( The Arizona Smoke Revue) and Nick Quarmby (The Dockery Boys, ColvinQuarmby).

The group progressed into playing local small gigs and gradually changed into a working band playing an annual tour and evolving from a folk rock band into what is now its signature ‘Folk and Roll’ sound. Gareth Turner replaced Simon Care and guitarist Charlotte Ayrton became a regular fixture for several years. A variety of front room and live recordings exist on various Phil Beer albums but the Band itself only ever made two Albums, ‘Mandorock’, and PBB ‘Live’.

The band has been through numerous line-ups over the years and played many short tours. In recent years, Phil’s commitments with Show of Hands and his busy studio life have made anything more than a token appearance each year impossible, until now------
In 2017. The band will undertake its first significant tour for a decade with a long overdue studio album.

The line up will be
Phil Beer- Guitars fiddles Mandolins and vocals
Emily Slade – Guitar
Gareth Turner- Melodeons
Greg McDonald – Bass
Steve Crickett- Drums
Olivia Dunn – Fiddle

Due to popular demand after a wonderful night last May which unbelievably was the Band’s first performance in Canterbury, we are pleased to bring the superb Phil Beer Band to the Gulbenkian for Folk in the Barn.

Support - The Hawthornes
The Hawthornes are a lively folk/rock band from Cheltenham. Taking cues from folk revivalists such as Laura Marling, Eliza Carthy, Frank Turner and Seth Lakeman, The Hawthornes combine beautiful female vocal driven acoustic music with mariachi style upbeat pop-rock hooks. Whilst chalking up appearances all over the UK with acts such as Phil Beer, Three Daft Monkeys and Terry & Gerry, The Hawthornes have gained a reputation for delivering a powerful live show, combining gentle beautiful soft melodies with upbeat powerful anthems that stay with their audience for weeks. Their second album "Cut & Run" was released in early 2017 and has already been met with much critical acclaim.
