Frozen Charlotte & Stadium Rock presents

Written by “remarkable” (Scotsman) Xana Marwick

‘You’ve chosen to take yourself away from things but me, I’m invisible.’

A frightened, starving boy and his only friend, a crow, encounter a man on the edge of society trying to forget his past.

Their meeting begins a surreal journey where magical realism meets real-life media broadcast on life in present day UK.

NESTS is a contemporary tale for Scotland’s Year of Young People that questions how our society treats the young and vulnerable. It questions the stories we tell ourselves and the impact we all have on each other.

Each of us should have someone looking out for us. Each of us should have someone who takes responsibility for us. Each of us should have someone who loves us. But do we?

For audiences of adults and young people over the age of 12.

Inge Thomson and Jenny Sturgeon are joined by singer and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Hayes (Admiral Fallow) and phenomenal vocal sculptor Jason Singh. Together they draw on the extensive field recordings of musician, composer and birdsong expert Magnus Robb, creating a multi dimensional and magically immersive performance, combining vocal and instrumental composition with sonic experimentation into the nature and rhythms of birdsong.

Resonating throughout the piece are themes of migration, both human and avian, the cyclical nature of the seasons and humanity’s relationship with nature.

Set design and lighting by Simon Gane. Projection mapping by Ben Everett.

The last two highly successful years have seen the band traverse the globe with notable performances at the Sydney Opera House, New Zealand’s Womad Festival, Central Park NY, Vancouver Folk Music Festival as well as tours in Canada, Asia, the Middle East, Europe & the UK. In summer 2014 the band presented the ground breaking, cross cultural collaboration ‘Boomerang’ (a celebration of Aboriginal Australian, Maori and Scottish indigenous culture) at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games to critical acclaim.

Breabach unite the talent of Calum MacCrimmon (pipes/whistles/bouzouki/vocals), Ewan Robertson (guitar/ vocals), James Mackenzie (pipes/flute/whistles), Megan Henderson (fiddle/vocals/stepdance) and James Lindsay (double bass). From launching their career as winners of the Open Stage Award at Celtic Connections in 2005 the band have moved from strength to strength with the release of fourth album Ùrlar (Songlines Top of the World February 2014). 2015 sees work begin on new record Astar (due for release early 2016), expect to hear previews from this at the upcoming shows.

Breabach reviews
“Breabach once again displayed all the artfulness, ambition and imagination that set them so decisively apart from the pack.”
“Tempos are often exhilarating, & the ensemble interplay is fiery. The colours & textures are beautifully layered but spaciously uncluttered lending the Breabach sound a depth & definition that only strengthens its impact.”
