A Renaissance Sequence
A Renaissance Sequence celebrates four Renaissance composers with anniversaries in 2017, including Claudio Monteverdi. The Chandos Singers will be joined by Jane Hunt (soprano) and Din Ghani (archlute).

The Chandos Singers, conducted by Malcolm Hill, are one of Bath’s leading chamber choirs. Their spring concert celebrates Claudio Monteverdi (born 1567) and three other Renaissance composers who have anniversaries this year. The programme demonstrates the variety of their work while including settings of Cantate Domino by three of the composers.

Monteverdi is represented by a scene from his opera The Return of Ulysses (featuring Paul Feldwick, bass), an extended madrigal, Sestina, a lament on the death of his 18-year-old lodger, two joyous church works for mixed choruses, a set of solo motets performed by Jane Hunt (soprano) accompanied by Din Ghani (archlute), and two operatic duets sung by Katharine Adams and Jane Hunt.

The concert also includes varied motets by Heinrich Isaac (died 1517), and movements from the In Te Domine Speravi Mass by Giovanni Francesco Anerio (born 1567), plus some of the most contrapuntally complex works by Alonso Lobo (died 5th April 1617), one of Spain’s two great Renaissance composers. Like Josquin, Bach and Webern, Lobo delighted in hidden canons, some of which were in reverse.

The concert will be held in the serene surroundings of the Magdalen Chapel on Holloway, Bath. A chapel is known to have existed on this site in the 11th century, and a leper hospital was built close by in the 12th. Both were under the care of the Abbey monks. The current building is 15th century. Despite severe bomb damage in 1942, it remains an active centre of worship.

Interval refreshments will be available.
